For five years, Mary Hashemi was the person who was in charge of the 6 o’clock news at WSAV-TV, Savannah’s NBC affiliate station. She wrote news, assigned reporters, decided what would be aired — and won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Regional Newscast in 2012.
But since her undergraduate days at Armstrong Atlantic State University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in English communications in 2007, she had contemplated a legal career. So when her interest in TV news waned, she decided to follow that career path instead. Mary enrolled at Savannah Law School and embarked on a busy three-year commitment to legal study. In addition to her studies, Mary was active on the Mock Trial Team, which elected her as president, and worked in the Chatham County Public Defender’s Office.
Mary Hashemi: Personal Injury Lawyer at Spiva Law Group
Shortly after receiving her J.D. in 2015, she joined Spiva Law Group, P.C., where she has been concentrating her practice on personal injury and wrongful death cases. She quickly became an active member of the trial team handling cases involving catastrophic injuries. In one of her cases, a client who was severely injured by a utility pole that fell on him received $2.3 million in a pre-suit resolution. In another, a mother and son who were injured when struck by a tractor-trailer received $850,000.
Mary particularly enjoys federal court cases due to their complexity. “I like the crazy, ridiculous procedural hoops you sometimes have to go through in federal court,” she says. “It’s almost like a giant puzzle that you have to figure out.”
“I also enjoy writing,” she says. “I’ve always liked to write, so I’m happy when I get to do that. And I like the research, too.”
A Passion For Helping People
Most of all, Mary says, she loves helping injured people get their lives back together. In particular, she enjoys having an opportunity to help mothers whose children have been injured — because as a mother who experienced the injury of a child herself, she knows how traumatic that can be.
“I just enjoy working with families and helping them deal with issues in any way that I can,” she says.
