Savannah attorney Howard Spiva is on a mission to eliminate traumatic brain injuries among children and he would like to involve more attorneys across the nation in Heads in Helmets.
The Heads in Helmets program is one of the most successful programs of the Justice for Children Foundation, a charitable organization that Spiva and his sister Ellen co-founded in 1999.
The Heads in Helmets program focuses on the importance of wearing bike helmets. The program offers education classes and distributes free bike helmets to children. Spiva regularly attends community events in the Savannah area and has given away thousands of free bike helmets to children over the years.
“We’re out in the community having a good time helping kids,” Spiva said in an interview on WTOC 11 News.
Spiva believes strongly that children should wear bike helmets when riding in cars as well as when riding on bicycles. He said most people don’t realize how often children in car accidents sustain brain injuries, even when strapped into car safety seats. Car crashes are a leading cause of head injuries to children. Many of those injuries are preventable with a proper-fitting helmet.
Spiva’s goal is to expand participation among attorneys in the Heads in Helmets program. Attorneys in other states can be ambassadors for the program and bring Heads in Helmets to their states. The program is a way for attorneys to be actively engaged in their communities in a public service effort that benefits children and families.
